cavern

Amber Rooms

DJ sets, live music, cheap cocktails and plenty of space for lounging on the artfully battered sofas.

Provides a funkier alternative to the indie and cheesy chart that dominates other parts of Exeter nightlife: DJs mix anything from urban and hip hop to funk, soul and blues. There's also live band performances, especially during festival weeks.

double locks

Double Locks

This riverside mecca has a magnetic pull on Exonians when the weather's fine. You can get there by foot or car but it's more fun to take a bike and wobble back on the cycle path. It's the perfect setting to savour a real ale or cider, and the pub grub soacks up any potential hangovers. You can waste hours sat outside watching people's dogs chasing sticks into the water, or superfit rowers heading towards the locks.

There are live bands dotted throughout the year, and ale festivals and barbeques during the summer. Just watch out for the queues at the bar. We recommend taking a warm top if you're planning a long session, and a large blanket and other sundries to guarantee a comfy spot out the back.

Exeshed

Exeshed

Slap-bang in the middle of Princesshay square, this place provides the perfect meeting place. The outside seating is a great spot for people-watching/posing and the regular cocktail happy hour is a beautiful thing.

If it's a bit nippy outside you can sink into one of the leather sofas at the back of the bar, or there's plenty of standing room for barflys on the go. Upstairs, a varied fusion menu beckons.

exeter phoenix

Exeter Phoenix

There's always something interesting happening inside this big light-filled arts building: from enigmatic exhibitions, to community radio and live performance.

Our favourite bit is the decked terrace outside, when the sun's shining and there's a DJ spinning some tunes.

The bar and tasty food menu means you can enjoy drinks and a meal while staying close to the cultural action.

ODDFellows

Gastro bar with a busy, buzzy atmosphere in the evenings.

The stylish interior decor and friendly staff make it an inviting place to relax with chums or loved ones over a bottle of wine or three. If you're peckish, the open kitchen at the back dishes up tempting English, seasonal fare, and the Sunday brunch menu and Bloody Marys soothe the worst hangovers away.

Beer lovers have plenty of choice downstairs but the real magic lies upstairs. A small but perfectly formed cocktail bar produces a dazzling array of cocktails - even looking through the menu is a treat.

angel bar cafe

The Angel Bar

The friendly laid-back vibes and eclectic music of this European-style bar make it distinct from some of its gaudier rivals in the city centre.

You can go from drinking fresh coffee and reading the papers in the afternoon, to drinking rum and dancing by the DJ booth in the evening.

It stays open nice and late and there's a snug smoking area out the back.

tea on the green

Tea on the Green

Does the traditional English tea exceptionally well: warm scones, melty clotted cream, tongue-tingling strawberry jam... 'tis beautiful my lover!

But that's only the tip of the Devon iceberg. Everything we've picked from the menu so far ('magic mushrooms','The Capricorn' panini, the nut roast) has been packed with flavour and beautifully presented.

It's also got an unrivalled selection of exotic teas that we never knew existed, including flower burst teas. Grab a seat outside and enjoy your cuppa amidst the olde England splendour of the Cathedral green.

old fire house

The Old Fire House

With an old building full of character, cheap wine, hearty grub and lots of live performances, it's no wonder students love this place. Lots of other people do too, which is why it's a good idea to get there early if you want a table seat in the evening.

Smokers can relax out the front and contemplate the universe away from the hustle bustle of the High Street.

tiger bills

Tiger Bills

Like healthy asian food? Like gutbuster steaks, burgers and Tex Mex? Can't decide? Tiger Bills has both options covered with a Thai/American menu that'll keep everyone happy.

Every day of the week there's a great deal on enabling you to eat out even if you're a bit cash strapped. Our favourite is the two-for-one Thai meals between 5.30pm and 7pm Sun-Thurs.

Timepiece

For late night frolics make your way up the well-worn cobbles of Little Castle Street and join the queue for Timepiece. Long-establised and consistently popular with students and anyone wanting an alternative to some of the cheesier late night offerings elsewhere in the city centre.

The downstairs bar and outside seating gets packed late at night and is great for socialising into the wee hours. The outside BBQ keeps the beer monsters happy. Upstairs the main floor is one big party on Friday and Saturday nights. The smaller, top floor is more intimate and groovesome.

There's something on every night of the week to float your boat, with the muiscal mix including everything from urban, salsa, and r'n'b to indie, pop, drum 'n' bass, and house.
